Semiconductor Devices for the Detection of Ionising Radiation

Jörn Grosse-Knetter, Göttingen University

Abstract:

Semiconductors are widely used for the detection of charged particles in high-energy physics and of photons in imaging devices. General principles of the detection mechanisms will be discussed and the realisation as detector device, in particular as pixel detector, will be introduced. Both the classical pn-junction based passive sensor as well as active sensor concepts, e.g. HV-CMOS designs, will be covered. Specific aspects such as radiation hardness of silicon and read-out electronics will be described.
