The Large Hadron Collider: A new era of particle physics at the energy frontier

Karsten Köneke, University of Freiburg

Abstract:

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest particle accelerator and as such a unique experimental tool. At its experiments, a wide breadth of exciting particle physics research is being performed.
The topics range from Quantum-Chromodynamics and precision Electroweak measurements, over studies of the heaviest known elementary particles, the Top quark and the Higgs boson, to searches for completely new phenomena.
After an introduction to the LHC itself and its detectors, this lecture will explain these physics topics and also highlight several key results.
