Applications of Group Theory in Physics

Carsten Müller, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf

Abstract:

The course first provides a general introduction into the theory of groups and representations. Afterwards, we discuss various applications of orthogonal groups SO(N) and unitary groups SU(N) in atomic and particle physics, ranging from the quantum mechanical coupling of angular momenta to the multiplet structure of hadrons. At the end, we give an outlook towards Lie groups of exceptional type and their relevance for field theories beyond the standard model.
